Observing Ruin

A room for reflection

Observing Ruin Intro

Advised by Dan Wheeler
2021

The south wall of the Manhattan Building is made of rough battered common brick, the last remnant of the party wall to a building demolished in 1949 to make way for Congress Parkway.

A prismatic opaque glass volume sits in contrast to the historic context, the ground plane, the rough broken brick and the chaos and noise of the surrounding intersection. Upon entry, guests turn off their devices, meander to and sit in a silent felt-lined room, looking onto this place, contemplating ruin.

When Congress Parkway was built, entire city blocks in Printer's Row were cut down the middle, buildings bulldozed to clear the way.
